This project focuses on the lives of Portuguese anti-fascists and freedom fighters from ex-colonies such as Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde who, in their fights against the fascist colonial dictatorship, lived in Eastern European Socialist countries to receive training. What impact did the time spent on the other side of the Iron Curtain, sometimes lasting several years, have on their lives? Did it change their perception of communism? Some left the party after this experience. Others remained communists. Some also formed romantic relationships and started families on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Some of these families were actually torn apart with the collapse of communism in 1989.
Based on testimonies collected from those who lived through these situations and autobiographical stories of the performers (from Cape Verde, Czech Republic, Germany, Mozambique, Portugal) concerning their families or their own past in former Eastern Europe, this performance questions the interactions between love, family ties and politics
ABOUT HOTEL EUROPA
Hotel Europa is a company formed by André Amálio (Portugal) and Tereza Havlíčková (Czech Republic). They have been developing documentary theatre performances that explore the boundaries between theatre, dance and performance. They use in their work an overlap of autobiographical material, family stories, national histories, testimonies, interviews and historiographical research. They deal with unaddressed issues of the recent past such as Colonialism, Fascism and Communism trying to make a bridge between the past and present. In their performances they are also discussing recent matters such as migration, environmental problems and gentrification.
Their performances have been presented in Portugal, Brazil, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The shows have been co-produced and presented in theatres and festivals such as Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Teatro Nacional São João, Culturgest, Teatro Municipal do Porto, FITEI, Teatro São Luiz, Théâtre de la Ville, Passages Transfestival, GREC festival, FIT BH festival, Mirada festival, euro-scene Leipzig, Akcent festival - Divadlo Archa, among others.
